Our Own Little Produce Stand!

Both of my boys love fresh fruit and vegetables and will snack on them all day if they’re available, however, lately, my youngest only wants ‘warm apples’ and ‘warm oranges’.  My intention has always been to put fruit and veggies out in a bowl on the island, but I started thinking about how the youngest wouldn’t really be able to reach it, or even see it there.  Honestly, the only reason it wasn’t already out like that was because I couldn’t find my bowl from when we moved (still likely in a box in the garage).

I knew we had somewhat of a useless space beside the new cabinets we installed in the kitchen, so I thought I would get a small rack to set fruit out where everyone could reach it.  I looked for weeks online and in stores I went to, but nothing seemed to be the right measurements for that space, or was way more than I wanted to spend!

Then, one day when we were in the garage, my husband asked what I was going to do with this old shelf we had out there…..immediately, I thought, there’s my fruit stand!!  I cleaned it up and gave it a few quick coats of white spray paint we had in the garage, and DONE!  The ‘Fresh Produce’ sign was actually an old chalkboard we had from our wedding that I never got rid of, figuring I would use it someday for something:)

Now, because our floors are not exactly level anywhere in the house, I used a wine cork to fix the unevenness, and, it provided scratch protection for the floor!  I just had my husband hold the shelf straight while I measured out the two uneven feet, then cut two pieces of the cork and glued them to the bottom of the existing feet on the shelf.

This was a super simple project using items we already had just sitting in the garage, so, no real cost involved at all (other than the actual produce, which we buy anyway).  Now, no more excuses of ‘cold’ fruit, and even while I was trying to take the pictures of it, my youngest kept stealing the peppers off the shelf!  Some days, I think my youngest could eat his weight in Cuties and peppers!!

Wow what a wonderful idea! We always have bowls of fruit on kitchen island, this would free up space on the island!!
