As we get closer and closer to finishing the dining room, the large empty alcove above the buffet needed some help! Although I originally planned to put a tall hutch in the space, the more I looked, the more I realized a hutch just wasn’t going to work in that space at all. When I found the buffet piece I refinished a few months ago, I realized that the best thing for this space was to build some custom floating shelves! I did actually look for some shelves to purchase, but they were either not the right size, had big brackets showing or were WAY too expensive! Check out how I built custom floating shelves for this space using 2×2’s, a few pieces of 3 inch molding and some inexpensive 1×12’s (yes, even with the current price of lumber, by using some roof sheathing boards instead of traditional ‘shelving’ boards, we were able to build these cheaper than buying pre-made shelves!).
